Canada’s government has announced that starting in autumn, renewal of Canadian passports will soon be accessible online through streamlined renewal processes. New passport designs were unveiled by the government on May 10.
According to a statement released by IRCC on the same day that the passport redesign was unveiled, eligible Canadians will be able to electronically submit the required paperwork and images to a secure government website under this new procedure.
Streamlined passport renewals are now available to more people in Canada as of March 2022.
Starting in May 2023, Canada will offer online passport renewal to the following categories:
- Passports that have expired within the last 15 years.
- Passengers whose passports were lost, stolen, or damaged.
As a clarification, a simplified passport renewal process requires different paperwork than a conventional passport renewal process.
Unlike standard passport renewals, simplified passport renewals require only four documents (such as identification with a photograph or proof of citizenship):
- Applicable fees
- 2 photos
- Completed forms
- 2 references
In the coming months, the IRCC expects to implement online passport processing procedures to simplify and speed up the passport application process. Service Canada’s usual application process must be followed by new passport applicants.
Advantages of Canadian passports
In addition to serving as a travel document, passports also serve as identification documents. As you depart for a trip and return from one, these identification credentials are more than just airport documents.
Visa-free entry to 185 countries
In 2022, 185 countries didn’t require Canadian passport holders to obtain visas, according to Henley & Partners’ research. Canadian passport holders have some of the best levels of access to other nations throughout the world without needing to obtain a visa, according to the most recent Global Passport Rankings.
Option to hold both Canadian and home passports (for Canadian Citizens)
Passports issued by their home countries and Canadian passports are acceptable to dual nationals. In the event that their home country permits it, dual citizens of Canada may own any number of passports they qualify for.
Advantages of Canadian citizenship
It is not possible to become a citizen of Canada by acquiring a passport. Your decision will be based on your new citizenship. If you hold a Canadian passport, you enjoy all the same rights and privileges as someone born here.
One of the essential liberties granted to this nation’s citizens is the right to vote in elections. Additionally, Canadians will have access to a broader range of work opportunities, including some that aren’t available to others with other Canadian statuses (permanent residents, temporary residents, etc.).
