Northwest Territories Nominee Program

The Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) is a Provincial Nominee Program, which is an initiative by the federal government of the province, supported by the government of Canada, to select immigrants who fit the labor gaps of their province. If you have a skill that matches the jobs they have available or the labor market of Northwest Territories, you have a chance to be nominated by this program and become a permanent resident of Canada. Not just you alone, even your common-law partner, spouse, children, family members, and other dependants can reap the same privilege.

Can you apply for NTNP?

The NTNP has under 4 streams. To apply for citizenship and immigration to Canada and permanent residence in Northwest Territories using this program, you must qualify for at least one of the streams. This may be your chance to fulfill your dream of living in Canada and gaining Canadian citizenship.  There are streams specifically designed for international students and foreign workers. The streams and their qualification criteria are discussed below. 

Entry Level/Semi-Skilled Occupations Stream

You must fulfill the following conditions to be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada through this stream. 

  • If you are living in Canada, you must have a valid work visa that must not expire during the application process.
  • You must have the desire to settle in this province of Canada.
  • You must have the educational qualifications or certification necessary for you to fulfill your duties in the job.
  • You must meet the eligibility required to gain a certification or license as dictated by the rules of the Northwest Territories.
  • If you work in a non-regulated occupation, your employer must ensure that you meet the required standards and have the required work experience.
  • Before submitting your application, make sure you have worked full-time in the same job which you wish to pursue in the Northwest Territories for a minimum of 6 months.
  • If you studied outside Canada, you will have to get your equivalent Canadian credential. You must gain an Education Credential Assessment. 
  • You must prove your language ability through a language test score of at least 4 according to Canadian Language Benchmark standards in English or French in the four skills of reading, writing, understanding and speaking. 
  • The language test must be an authorized testing organization such as IELTS, CELPIP-General, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada. 
  • A language test remains valid for two years from the day you receive your score. Ensure that your language test result is valid when you submit your application. 
  • You will be required to show that you have enough funding to financially support you as well as your dependents in Canada. This can be in the form of bank statements from a Canadian financial institution that were signed in three months before the submission of your application. 

Here is a list of some supporting documents you may require while submitting your application for this stream to apply for permanent residency in Canada as well as citizenship and immigration. 

  • You must have a valid work visa.
  • Among your travel documents must be a valid passport.
  • You must have the original or a legible copy of your birth certificate.
  • If it applies to you, you must have your marriage certificate or declaration of common-law union.
  • If you are migrating to Canada with any dependents, you must have their birth certificate and passports as well.

Skilled Worker Stream

Listed below are the eligibility criteria that you must qualify if you wish to immigrate to Canada and gain Canadian permanent residency.

  • You must be legally residing in Canada.
  • You must have a valid work visa that must remain valid while your application is being processed.
  • In case your work permit expires during the processing, your application will be rejected.
  • You must have the desire to settle permanently in the Northwest Territories.
  • You must have the educational qualifications or certification necessary for you to fulfill your duties in the job.
  • You must meet the eligibility required to gain a certification or license as dictated by the rules of the Northwest Territories.
  • If you work in a non-regulated occupation, your employer must ensure that you meet the required standards and have the required work experience.
  • You must have work experience of one year in the same job that you wish to pursue in Canada as a permanent resident.
  • If you studied outside Canada, you will have to get your equivalent of a Canadian education through an ECA.
  • You must prove your language ability through a language test score of at least 7 according to Canadian Language Benchmark standards in English or French in the four skills of reading, writing, understanding and speaking. 
  • The language test must be an authorized testing organization such as IELTS, CELPIP-General, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada. 
  • A language test remains valid for two years from the day you receive your score. Ensure that your language test result is valid when you submit your application. 
  • The test is mandatory for those who are applying for a job under the skill types 0 and A as classified by the National Occupation Classification. 
  • If you are applying for a job under skill type B, you require a minimum score of 5 according to CLB standards. 
  • You are required to show that you have funding to financially support you as well as your dependents in Canada. This can be in the form of bank statements from a Canadian financial institution that were signed in three months before the submission of your application.
  • You must also have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada that offers to pay the median wage for that occupation as dictated by the Provincial Government of the Northwest Territories. 

Here is a list of some supporting documents you may require while submitting your application for this stream to apply for permanent residency in Canada as well as citizenship and immigration. 

  • You must have a valid work visa.
  • Among your travel documents must be a valid passport.
  • You must have the original or a legible copy of your birth certificate.
  • If it applies to you, you must have your marriage certificate or declaration of common-law union.
  • If you are migrating to Canada with any dependents, you must have their birth certificate and passports as well.

If the documents are in any other language, you must have them translated into the Canadian languages of French or English. You are responsible to ensure that the documentation remains valid till the end of the processing of your application. 

Express Entry Skilled Worker Stream

If you are a temporary foreign worker in the Northwest Territories currently working in the province, this stream can help you gain permanent residency in Canada. You must qualify for the following conditions. 

  • You should be a legal immigrant in Canada with a valid work permit.
  • You must have a valid occupation offer from an eligible employer residing in Canada in the Northwest Territories. 
  • As dictated by the NOC or the National Occupational Classification, the occupation must be for skill type 0, A, or B.
  • You will have to prove your language proficiency in English or French through a language test score that covers the 4 skills of reading, writing, understanding, and speaking. 
  • If you are applying for a job under skill type 0 or A, you must score a minimum of 6 according to the Canadian Language Benchmark standards and if you are applying under skill type B, your minimum score must be 5. 
  • You must have the required work experience needed for you to carry out your duties in the job you are offered in Canada.
  • You must have worked for at least one year in the same occupation that you wish to pursue in Canada. 
  • The job offer you receive as a foreign national must be for a full-time position, a permanent job with a wage that is standard for that occupation. 
  • You must have an active Express Entry online profile. 

Business Stream

To apply through this stream, you must fulfill the following conditions.

  • You must be able to invest $300,000 CAD to start your own business or in an existing business in the Northwest Territories. 
  • You must own 33.3% of the business. 
  • $500,000 CAD must be your personal net worth. 
  • You must prove your language proficiency through a language test score of at least 4 in English or French according to the Canadian Language Benchmark standards in the 4 areas of reading, writing, understanding, and speaking.
  • The test must be from an authorized testing organization and taken in the two years previous to your application submission. 
  • You must have a basic understanding of the Canadian economy as well as the working of the economy of the Northwest Territories.
  • You must have the work experience as well as the educational qualification required to perform your job in the Northwest Territories.
  • You must have the ability to financially take care of yourself and any dependents you bring with you to Canada.
  • You must not have an active application under any other Provincial Nominee Programs.
  • You must not be a refugee claimant.

Apart from Northwest Territories, the other provinces such as British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Alberta, Yukon, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario, all have their own provincial nominee programs. The province of Quebec has a different program to nominate applicants for Canadian citizenship and a resident visa or Canadian permanent residence.
