The list of professionals qualified for the Global Talent Stream was expanded on December 2022 by ESDC.
ESDC oversees many immigration-related issues because it supports Canada’s labor force, including issuing Labor Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) and managing GTS. It allows Canadian employers to hire skilled foreign workers in the technology sector faster with accelerated processing.
Under the GTS, employers can obtain a work permit if they wish to hire a foreign skilled worker in a high-demand occupation (added because of an inadequate number of qualified Canadians). In order to qualify for a GTS work license, two weeks of service are required.
Global Talent Stream – List of newly added occupations
Five engineering posts have been added to the list of qualifying occupations, bringing the total to 17 occupations.
These occupations are listed below:
- Computer engineers
- Civil engineers
- Mining engineers
- Aerospace engineers
- Electrical and electronic engineers
What are the reasons for the expansion of eligibility?
As the labor market in Canada changes, the GTS-eligible job list evolves; the inclusion of these five new roles suggests that engineers may be in short supply domestically.
It has become increasingly common in immigration this year to target specific professions to meet Canada’s labor market needs.
The following are some of these measures:
- Six businesses have teamed up to address New Brunswick’s labor needs through the New Brunswick Critical Worker Pilot (NBCWP).
- The elimination of obstacles for doctors applying through Express Entry to get permanent residency (in light of historical shortages of healthcare personnel).
- The passing of Bill C-19 gives the minister of immigration the authority to construct groups in the Express Entry pool. It is based on requirements such as jobs that are in high demand and send ITAs to these groups. Express Entry will therefore probably focus more on professions in 2023.
Canada’s high labor shortages and an expanding senior population would likely require the country to continue targeting its economic demands much more aggressively after COVID. To meet its in-demand labor demands, Canada has already recognized the benefits of immigration.
If an employer wishes to hire foreign workers through the GTS, it is important to prepare their applications properly. It includes creating a Labor Markets Benefits Plan (LMBP) to demonstrate their commitment to initiatives that benefit the Canadian labor market in the long term. Having an immigration attorney draft the application can significantly enhance its thoroughness and compliance with the program guidelines.
