Today, foreign students can now work temporarily over 20 hours a week in Canada during the academic year.
According to the IRCC’s announcement, students will be permitted to work more than 20 hours a week between 15 November 2022 and 31 December 2023. Several industries such as retail, hospitality, and food services, have historically predominated student workers. This is a one-time measure designed to address the labor shortage in Canada. Employment types are not limited.
Foreign students in Canada already working extra hours are allowed to do so under the new policy.
Eligibility to work in Canada
During their studies, many overseas students find that they have to work part-time to cover living expenses, such as rent, food, books, tuition fee, and transformation. Work authorization is not required in Canada for foreign students with student visas. It is permissible for students to work off-campus during an academic semester if they intend to return to their studies the following semester. Summer and winter breaks are periods when students can work unrestricted hours.
The following conditions must be met for you to be able to work while you study in Canada:
- A valid study permit is required.
- Are enrolled in a full-time educational program
- The institution has determined that you are in satisfactory academic standing;
- Currently enrolled in a six-month academic, vocational or professional training program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate;
- Obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
What is the need for international students in Canada?
The increasing number of international students is not just related to their tuition costs, but also to their consumption of goods and services during their stay in the country. Further, a large number of foreign students remain in Canada after graduating.
Approximately one million job openings require immigration to fill a record labor shortfall in Canada. A plan to welcome 500,000 new permanent immigrants by 2025 has been unveiled by the Canadian government to address the shortage. The experience and language skills that international students possess, along with their high level of French or English, make them valuable resources for the Canadian labor market.
Studies permits issued in 2022 will exceed 400,000
A significant backlog of study application permits demonstrates that the IRCC issued nearly 452,000 between January and August 2022. Research permits total 125,966 applications, and 34,000 study permit extensions have been requested.
What are the causes for foreign students to migrate to Canada?
The Canadian Bureau of International Education recently conducted research on this subject. Canada is one of the top choices for overseas students because of its reputation as a safe and stable nation.
It is common for Canada to accept international students at a certain percentage. It was considered the easiest part of moving to Canada to receive an acceptance letter from a school, according to a study published in July.
Obtaining permanent residency as a foreign student
Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWPs) are available after completing an educational program. Following the completion of their academic program, a PGWP holder is permitted to work for up to three years in any profession. While you are not eligible for permanent residency as a student, your employment with a PGWP counts toward your application. You might be qualified for a PGWP after one year of employment in Canada. To qualify for Express Entry, you must additionally fulfill additional conditions.
