The temporary regulation is currently in effect for students in Canada. Those who applied for a study permit today apply to foreign students who have already submitted the application. It will also be possible for them to benefit from this program if their application is approvs by IRCC.
It was announced in Ottawa on 7 October 2022 by Immigration Minister Fraser. The purpose of this policy is to alleviate the labor shortages that are currently occurring in the country. The purpose of this initiative is to solve the labor shortages that are currently occurring throughout Canada, according to Fraser.
According to historical standards, Canada’s unemployment rate is low and its labor shortage is historic. In September, the unemployment rate was 5.2%, down from 5.4% in the same month the previous year, according to Statistics Canada’s data as of this morning.
While enrolled in classes, international students may work off-campus for up to 20 hours each week under current Canadian education laws. Furthermore, this approach emphasizes the importance of completing studies rather than finding employment in Canada for foreign students. Almost one million job openings have led to the Canadian government temporarily easing this restriction. Fraser estimates that around 500,000 foreign students work over 20 hours each week in Canada.
Overseas students often choose Canada as their study destination. It has tripled in size since 2021, with over 620,000 international students attending. About 450,000 study permits are issues in one year by Canada. Canada still has a high demand for students due to its quality educational institutions, multiculturalism, accessibility to the Canadian dollar, and employment opportunities and permanent residency opportunities.
During today’s presentation, Fraser noted that Canada had already dealt with 452,000 study visa applications between January and August of 2022, a 23% increase over 367,000 in 2021. The number of study permits handled by the Canadian government this year has already surpassed the number handled in any previous year.
After graduating from university, most foreign students want to become permanent citizens, according to the Canadian Bureau for International Education. Due to this, IRCC offers a variety of programs aimed at helping foreign graduates find and maintain employment in the country.
IRCC offers a Postgraduate Work Permit which is popular among graduates. PGWP offers open work permits to international students meeting the eligibility requirements. Foreign nationals are able to work for any employer in Canada with an open work permit. The validity of PGWPs is for three years. After obtaining professional work experience in Canada, PGWP holders are eligible for economic-class immigration programs. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) of the IRCC is a popular program that allows PGWP holders to obtain permanent residence. It is also common for foreign graduates with domestic work experience to be rewards by Canadian provinces and territories. In order to encourage international graduates to settle in areas where their contributions to the labor market can be significant, the Quebec and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) provide pathways to permanent residence across the country.
It is also a practice of Canada’s provinces and territories to reward foreign graduates with domestic work experience. The government of Canada has been increasingly looking at international students as long-term residents over the past few years, particularly during the pandemic. A major component of IRCC’s plan is to resettle over 405,000 immigrants in 2021. This is enlisting the help of graduates from abroad. The IRCC invited and accepted a large number of applicants for the Canadian Experience Class in order to accomplish this goal. Additionally, in 2021, a TR2PR program was launched, enabling roughly 90,000 temporary residents to seek permanent residence.
For the IRCC to achieve its goal of settling over 405,000 new immigrants in 2021. Shattering Canada’s newly landed immigrant record, students from abroad played an increasingly important role. This was accomplished by inviting and accepting a significant number of applicants for the Canadian Experience Class. A temporary resident can also apply for permanent residence under the Temporary Residence to Permanent Residence (TR2PR) program. It was launched in 2021 for a total of 90,000 temporary residents.
As part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to Express Entry. Minister Fraser has also been asked to develop new strategies to help temporary foreign workers. International students gain permanent residency through Express Entry. Fraser also laid out the government’s plans for helping more temporary residents gain permanent residency. To speed up application processing, the approach is build around five pillars, including modernizing the immigration system. With the introduction of the Immigration Levels Plan 2023–2025 by November 1st. We will learn more about the Canadian government’s newcomer strategy.
