Temporary Foreign Workers Can Apply For Jobs In Canada

Canadian employers need foreign workers to meet the skilled worker shortages. In light of this, the Canadian government has given instructions to continue accepting applications for all the streams under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Also, the government has given an indication to the employers that priority will be given to those occupations that provide food security in the country. Lately, with the intention of limiting the spread of coronavirus, Canada had closed the border for people who are non-residents. However, several employers requested the government to let the flow of required labor be maintained. Because there are several industries in Canada that rely on foreign skilled workers in order to run the business without any labor shortage. In view of this, Canada has stated that it will give priorities to occupations that are required in maintaining the flow of food supply to various parts of the country such as food-processing, agri-food, primary agriculture, and trucking. Here are the measures that the government has adopted to help immigrants and employers:

Labor Market Impact Assessment is given extensions

Earlier the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIAs) used to have a validity of six months only. Now, the government has extended it to a period of nine months. Applicants who wish to come to Canada through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program and any other agricultural stream will get a validity period of nine months. And those employers who already have approved LMIAs will also get an extension of three months.

Some flexibility granted

Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Canadian workers will now get some comfort related to the terms of employment like wages and working hours. The government will be flexible with the workers in reporting layoffs as well.

LMIA can be done online or via email

The government will temporarily accept LMIAs through the email mode owing to service disruptions at most of the processing offices and Canada Post service. Recently, the government has decided to start the LMIA process online. Thus, Canadian employers can make use of LMIA online process to avoid post or email service.
