In response to the earthquake in Morocco on September 8, IRCC has unveiled a series of measures to support Moroccan nationals. Moroccan nationals to receive support from IRCC through these measures.
In reaction to the earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8, 2023, IRCC has taken preventative measures. The IRCC is prioritizing the processing of applications for temporary and permanent residence filed on or before that date to assist individuals affected by this natural disaster. Priority processing is available for a number of categories. For example current applications for refugee resettlement and guest visa applications for members of the immediate family of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Additionally, as of October 19, 2023, Moroccan nationals living in Canada may submit an application for a free extension of their temporary status. This extension gives them the freedom and support they so much need at this trying time, enabling them to continue their education, work, or see family.
These actions specifically target Moroccan nationals who were in Canada on September 8, the day of the earthquake. IRCC’s primary goal is to simplify the process for individuals affected to renew their temporary status within Canada or transition between various temporary visa categories, ensuring a smooth and accommodating procedure for all parties involved.
It’s important to note that the foundation for these operations is similar to that of the past responses to the earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and Syria in February 2023. These group initiatives highlight the IRCC’s unwavering dedication to offering vital assistance amid natural disasters. It’s crucial to emphasize that, as of now, no formal announcements have been made regarding any additional humanitarian efforts specifically targeting those affected by the earthquake.
The necessity of a passport for a PR visa has been waived
The IRCC is proposing actions to support the earthquake-affected Moroccan population. Individuals who lost their documentation due to the disaster will receive permission to enter Canada on a permanent resident visa. They won’t need a passport or travel document.
These regulations also apply to Moroccan permanent residents and Canadian citizens who return to Canada. During this period, the IRCC will waive fees for temporary passports and passports with restricted validity. They will also not charge for emergency travel papers, certificates of Canadian citizenship, or travel documents for permanent residents.
These rules will take effect on October 19, 2023, and run through March 12, 2024. The IRCC is expected to release more details about these actions in the coming days.
Response from Canada
The actions taken by the IRCC are an essential part of Canada’s reaction to the events in Morocco. Additionally, the Canadian government initiated other programs, including a fundraising campaign in collaboration with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, to offer humanitarian aid to the earthquake-affected region. Following the September earthquake, the Canadian government pledged to match donations. This matching effort would last for 20 days, with a maximum matching fund of $3 million.
The 2021 census data discloses that out of the 81,775 individuals who identify Morocco as their birthplace. Canada designates 12,835 of them as recent immigrants. Most Moroccans choose to settle in Montreal, the largest French-speaking city in Canada.
Following the earthquake, the Quebec government immediately committed $1.5 million to aid relief operations in Morocco. It is a further indication of Canada’s willingness to help out in times of need.
