Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau became the center of attention online after appearing together at Coachella. The two were seen holding hands, enjoying performances, and spending time together during Justin Bieber’s headline show.
While the internet focused on their appearance, another question came up: could Katy Perry become a Canadian citizen?
The simple answer is no, not easily.
Perry’s family background includes English, German, Irish, and Portuguese roots. Her ancestry is connected to places like California, the American South, and the Azores. There is no known Canadian connection in her family history.
Without Canadian ancestry, her only possible path to citizenship would be through marriage or partnership with Trudeau. This process is called spousal sponsorship. It requires a formal application, living in Canada, and waiting through a long processing period.
Even for a global celebrity like Katy Perry, the process would take time and effort.
At the same time, many Americans already qualify for Canadian citizenship without realizing it.
The Law That Does Not Apply To Perry
A new rule under Bill C-3, which started on December 15, 2025, has made it easier for people with Canadian ancestry to claim citizenship.
Anyone born before that date who can prove they have a Canadian ancestor is already considered a Canadian citizen.
There is no need to apply to become a citizen. There is also no requirement to live in Canada, pass a language test, or be sponsored.
Instead, individuals only need to apply for a certificate that confirms their citizenship.
The law also removed the limit on how many generations can pass down citizenship. This means even a distant relative, like a great-great-grandparent, can qualify someone.
For example, an ancestor who moved from Quebec to New England many years ago can still create a valid connection. The same applies to families who moved from New Brunswick in the past.
Because of this change, many people are now searching for proof of their family history.
Canadian archives have seen a huge rise in requests for old records. In Quebec alone, requests have increased by 3,000%.
People who have already applied for proof of citizenship are facing processing times of around 10 months. Immigration experts say the demand is very high.
Many People May Already Qualify
Katy Perry’s case depends on her family background. Since she does not have Canadian ancestry, she cannot use this new rule.
However, many Americans may have a different situation.
People with family roots in regions like New England, upstate New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Louisiana may have a higher chance of finding a Canadian ancestor.
In some cases, family names may have changed over time. For example, a name like Leblanc could have become White, or Charpentier could have changed to Carpenter.
Old family stories about relatives from Canada or French-speaking households may also be clues.
If a person qualifies through one ancestor, then others in the same family may also qualify. This includes siblings, cousins, and their children.
In simple terms, while Katy Perry may need a complex process to become a Canadian citizen, many others may already have that right without knowing it.
