As of May 21st, IRCC starts issuing ITAs for Parents and Grandparents Program. This initiative targets sponsors who previously submitted “Interest to Sponsor” forms.
Over the course of two weeks, IRCC hopes to distribute 35,700 ITAs in order to approve 20,500 full applications for permanent residency. Sponsors’ email addresses supplied on their original “Interest to Sponsor” form submission will be used to receive ITAs.
Eligibility Criteria for Receiving Invitations under the 2024 PGP Program
In order to be eligible for an invitation under this year’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), sponsors need to meet the requirements listed below:
- Interest to Sponsor Form: 2020 Interest to Sponsor forms have to be filled out by sponsors via the IRCC website. An ITA should not have been sent to them in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023.
- Citizenship: Sponsors must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or registered Indians under the Canadian Indian Act.
- Age: Sponsors must be at least 18 years old.
- Residency: The sponsors have to live in Canada right now. Potential sponsors will need to present documentation proving their residency status at the Interest to Sponsor stage.
- Financial Eligibility: Sponsors have to fulfill the PGP’s minimal income criterion. If a sponsor and spouse are married or in a common-law relationship, their combined income may be taken into account. The IRCC must receive proof of income from sponsors as well.
- Undertaking:
- Sponsors must commit to financially supporting the sponsored individual(s) for a period of 20 years, starting from the date they attain permanent resident status. For sponsors residing in Quebec, this commitment period is reduced to 10 years.
- Sponsors must agree to reimburse any social assistance benefits received by the sponsored family members, if applicable, for a duration of 20 years.
- Quebec Residents: An extra undertaking needs to be made with the province of Quebec if the sponsor lives there.
- Following these particular eligibility requirements guarantees sponsors the possibility of being invited to participate in the 2024 Parents and Grandparents Program.
Next Steps After Receiving an ITA from the PGP Program
Following receipt of an invitation to apply (ITA) from the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), you must submit your application as soon as possible, within the deadline indicated in the invitation email. You will also be required to submit your application and the appropriate application fees, which begin at $1,205 CAD.
The IRCC highly advises sponsors to carefully read the extensive instruction manual and carefully put together the application package. Before submitting your application to the IRCC, be sure it is accurate and complete. Depending on the situation, an incomplete application or one that is submitted after the deadline may result in issues or a flat rejection of your application. As a result, following the instructions and fulfilling all prerequisites is crucial to ensuring a seamless application procedure.
Applications will be declined under the following circumstances:
- Incomplete submission.
- Absence of required fees.
- Submission after the deadline specified in the ITA email.
- If the applicant did not receive an initial ITA.
- Discrepancies between the information provided in the application and the details in the “Interest to Sponsor” form.
If the sponsor seeks assistance from a representative, applications must be submitted through the Representative Permanent Residence Portal. Alternatively, they can be submitted via the Permanent Residence Portal.
Options for Sponsors Who Do Not Receive an ITA This Year
For the fourth year running, applicants for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) will only be considered by the immigration department if they are from the 2020 intake.
The Super Visa, however, is an additional option provided by Canada’s immigration system for helping Canadian citizens and permanent residents reunite with their parents and grandparents.
The Super Visa is a method for temporary residency that allows parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to be sponsored and temporarily stay in Canada. Family members may enter Canada under the Super Visa for a maximum of five years without having to apply for a new visa starting of June 2022. Additionally, Super Visa holders can apply for a two-year visa extension. This allows for a maximum stay of seven years during a single visit.
The Super Visa provides a convenient option for bringing family members to Canada. However, it only offers temporary residence status to parents and grandparents. There are no annual restrictions on the quantity of applications that IRCC can handle while using this option.
