Compared to 2019, postgraduate health and general science programs showed a 25% increase through September 2023. Since the entire year of 2019, students from India (+20%), Iran (+41%), and Nigeria (+230%) have driven the field’s expansion.
The fastest-growing fields are computing and IT programs
International students’ interest in undergraduate computing and IT programs increased by 110% between September 2023 and the full year 2019; this growth rate outpaced that of all other study areas.
While 30.5% of students with student visas issued are from India, where the bulk of students studying computer and information technology, there is also considerable impetus from nations like Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Nepal, which all add to the growing appeal of these programs. In comparison to 2019, the percentage of undergraduate student visas granted to citizens of Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Nepal increased by three percentage points in 2023.
Through September 2023, postgraduate computing and IT saw a 70% increase from 2019. The number of study licenses granted to Chinese students for these programs increased by 74% compared to 2022 and an astounding 170% compared to 2019 through September 2023, indicating the significant role Chinese students have had in fueling this expansion.
There is notable growth observed in engineering programs as well
From January to September of 2023, enrollment in undergraduate engineering programs increased by 32% over the course of 2019.
The growth and diversity of engineering programs at the undergraduate level is primarily driven by African students. Five out of the top ten and twelve out of the top 20 undergraduate engineering students in September 2023, respectively, were African-American. Furthermore, no nation outside of Africa had growth greater than 10% when compared to 2022 as a whole.
Algeria has the potential to grow into a significant and growing supplier of engineering students for Canadian colleges, according to ApplyBoard. Up until September 2023, 22% of all study permits awarded to Algerian undergraduate students were for courses in engineering.
Through September 2023, postgraduate engineering enrollment increased by 41% above that of 2019. Ghana, Algeria, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nigeria have all made major contributions to the transformation of student diversity in this area.
