In January, Canada witnessed a great rise in immigration levels as the country welcomed a total of 24,655 new immigrants as permanent residents. And this is the biggest month for immigration since February last year.
With this news, we can say that the immigration numbers in Canada are now in a recovery mode. Canada seems to be on the path of achieving its immigration target of welcoming 401,000 new immigrants in 2021.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Canada used to welcome around 25,000 to 35,000 immigrants each month. However, Canadian immigration reaches its peak during summer and spring. Several newcomers arrive in Canada during the months of summer and spring as the weather is pleasant and makes it easier to carry out the settlement process. Further, the schools in Canada resume their normal activities in September.
The immigration system was disrupted throughout the world due to the onset of Coronavirus. In Canada too, the immigration numbers remained extremely low and Canada welcomed only 184,370 new immigrants in 2020 while the target was to welcome 341,000 newcomers.
To even out the immigration levels, Canada’s immigration minister increased the intake of new immigrants for 2021 and announced to welcome 401,000 permanent residents. If Canada manages to achieve this target, it will be one of the highest immigration levels in the history of the Canadian immigration system. As per the current record, 401,000 new immigrants arrived in Canada in 1913.
The solid beginning of this year indicates that Canada is moving in the right direction and if the seasonal immigration pattern is continued, Canada will be able to meet its target by welcoming around 35,000 new immigrants each month by the summer.
Marco Mendicino has pointed that the IRCC wants to target temporary residents and transition them to become permanent residents. This could be one of the reasons that IRCC is inviting a large number of Canadian Experience Class candidates to apply for a Permanent Residence.
Since the start of 2021, Canada has invited only Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program candidates. In one of the express entry draws held in February, IRCC invited as many as 27,332 candidates belonging to CEC.
