According to Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino, Canada maintains its efforts to welcome 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021.
The federal government in an interview with Reuters has revealed that Canada has welcomed nearly 39500 new immigrants in the month of July, which is more compared to the previous month in June with 35700 immigrants.
How does Immigration Level Plan 2021-2023 help?
The Immigration Level Plan 2021-2023, aims to welcome over 401,000 new immigrants every year starting 2021. Before the pandemic, the annual target was 341,000 immigrants.
A pioneering immigration plan in all Canadian history, pursued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) it intends to welcome more new immigrants to contribute to Canada’s post-pandemic economic recovery.
Let’s see what the Statistics say
Canada has admitted nearly 184,00 immigrants so far in the present year.
The months June and July particularly, have had the highest number of new immigrants in Canada’s history. This explains that Canada can coyly catch up with the need to play if it wants to achieve its target this year itself.
IRCC can fulfill the target by adding 217,000 newcomers in the remaining five months of 2021. That will make 43,400 new immigrants per month on average.
Monthly admission of 43,400 newcomers to close 2021 would be difficult but there is still a chance that it will be possible. That being said, Canada has welcomed an average of 25,000 to 35,000 new immigrants every month before the Corona pandemic.
IRCC’s Roles
IRCC is striving to achieve its target goal or at least come close to it, by the end of this year i.e 2021. It has several ongoing plans to make this possible. For example,
1. There is about 23,000 additional Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) holders who can now immigrate to Canada following the travel restrictions of June 21st.
Additionally, those who have been approved for permanent residence in Canada can immigrate effectively.
2. In May, six new permanent residency streams were launched for 90,000 international student graduates and working professionals living in Canada to become immigrants.
IRCC is hoping to process 40,000 of these applications by the end of this year.
3. All major Express Entry draws have been held up by IRCC since 2020. This is because it has prioritized Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates as 90 percent of them are already living in Canada. IRCC is expected to complete the landing process of such a huge number of candidates by the end of this year.
However, the uncertainty of the pandemic can disrupt IRCC’s plan.
Nonetheless, the increased frequency in permanent resident arrivals should at least see Canada come close to its 401,000 new immigrants target goal. Even if IRCC manages about 40,000 monthly landings to close the year it will fall narrowly short of its target by welcoming 385,000 immigrants and that would still be the second-highest total in Canadian history. The current record stands at 401,000 immigrants who were welcomed in 1913.
