IRCC officially launched the 2024 International Experience Canada (IEC) pool, and accepting applications. Encourage eligible individuals to apply for this opportunity and gain valuable Canadian work experience.
Through the ICE work permit project, qualified young people from nations that have bilateral youth mobility agreements with Canada are able to temporarily live and work in Canada. Almost 90,000 applications from more than 30 countries are accepted this year, providing them with the opportunity to gain useful job experience in Canada. As of right now, anyone who meets the requirements and is eager to get started can do so by sending an IEC profile to IRCC, This initiates a chance for a broad group of applicants to start a short-term work and residency program in Canada. Keep yourself informed and take advantage of this opportunity to further your career.
What is the operational mechanism of the IEC program?
Those who meet the requirements of partner countries having bilateral Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada and who are between the ages of 18 and 29 or 18 and 30 or 18 and 35 (inclusive, depending on their nationality), may be eligible for an IEC work permit.
Furthermore, the IEC follows a candidate/applicant approach, just like programs under Canada’s Express Entry monitoring system. If they satisfy all fundamental qualifying requirements, potential candidates may submit a candidacy profile to IRCC, making them candidates. The department extends an invitation to apply for a work permit if it decides to move further with the candidate’s profile. Also, candidates become applicants after filing the application, taking a step toward acquiring their work visa.
One of the three program streams allows participants to apply for a work permit:
- Working Holiday stream: Offers a two-year Open Work Permit, allowing employment with most Canadian employers and industries.
- Young Professionals stream: Provides an employer-specific or LMIA-based work permit for individuals with a job offer, intending to work with a single Canadian employer.
- International Co-op Internship stream: Permits citizens from participating countries enrolled in a home-country post-secondary program to intern/work with a specific Canadian company. Applicants must arrange co-op placements before applying.

What advantages does the IEC bring to Canada?
One of the most important ways that the IEC program helps alleviate labor shortages in Canada is in the manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail commerce, and other sectors. Canada may access a valuable pool of young workers by promoting bilateral agreements with partner IEC countries. In addition to meeting current business demands, this gives young people in Canada and abroad the opportunity to gain international work experience.
Moreover, IEC workers make a substantial long-term contribution to the growth of the labor force in Canada by being eligible for permanent immigration after gaining the necessary work experience. The data for this year demonstrate the ongoing growth in the IEC intake, which highlights the program’s critical role in the Canadian economy. Furthermore, the IEC program’s significance and ongoing growth on a global scale are highlighted by Finland’s scheduled addition to the list of partner countries in 2024.
