How Do You Get Permanent Residency (PR) Through the PNP?
To gain Canadian permanent residency through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), you need to go through two main steps: first, apply to the province or territory; then, apply to the federal government.
The process begins with securing a provincial nomination. Once nominated by a province or territory, you can then submit your application for permanent residence to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
There are two general pathways, depending on whether the stream requires an Expression of Interest (EOI):
If EOI Is Not Required:
- Apply directly to the PNP for a nomination.
- Receive your provincial nomination.
- Submit your PR application to IRCC.
If EOI Is Required:
- Create a profile and enter the province’s EOI pool.
- Wait to receive an invitation to apply from the province.
- Apply to the PNP for a nomination.
- Receive your provincial nomination.
- Submit your PR application to IRCC.
As of now, base PNP applications (non-Express Entry aligned) take approximately 21 months to be processed by IRCC—starting from when you submit your PR application to when a decision is made.
