The Start-up Visa Program for international entrepreneurs allows for the establishment and operation of an innovative enterprise in Canada. Aiming to attract foreign entrepreneurs with the potential of building global businesses. The program seeks to develop innovative businesses that are competitive.
It is necessary for applicants to have a qualifying business and a commitment of investment from an approved organization. And a government letter of support to be considered for the program. Those who are successful in the program can receive a work permit that is valid for up to five years to start their businesses in Canada. The Strat-up Visa Program – Its Eligibility
This program is only available to business owners who own approved businesses. Therefore, if you own 10% of the voting rights of the company, you will always have to own at least 10%. As well, at least 50% of the voting rights must be jointly held by the authorized investment organization and all owners (up to five owners may jointly apply).
When an individual owns such property, they must:

- English or French language requirements should be fulfilled.
- In order to settle in Canada and live there, you should have sufficient funds.
- Ensure that you are medically and security cleared before entering the country.
- Providing evidence of a designated organization’s support.
Documentation of money must be provided by a recognized Canadian organization. Startups may be financed or invested in by designated organizations after receiving government approval.
The specified groups will be required to provide you with letters of support for your PR request. To ensure the project’s success, IRCC must also receive a commitment certificate from the selected organization.
A group may support and sponsor several projects simultaneously (also called syndication). A letter of support and commitment certificate must be submitted by each authorized group in such a situation.
Providing evidence of funding
No personal funds are required, however, proof of investment and financial backing must be provided.
Venture capital companies and angel investor groups require your company to demonstrate a specific amount of funding. If you received sponsorship from a business incubator, you are exempt from having to show documentation of your financial support.
- You are required to provide proof of CAD $200,000 in confirmed funding if money has been secured from an approved venture capital group.
- A confirmation that CAD $75,000 in confirmed funding has been secured from a specific angel investor organization is required.
- Financial proof will be more stringent when there are multiple sponsors.
You will also be required to undergo a peer review by the governance body of your selected institution in order to ensure that all required checks and protocols have been implemented and that the SUVP has been followed.
Financially capable of settling in Canada
In order to be considered for financial aid, you will need to provide proof that you can support yourself and your family without government assistance.
The Start-up Visa Program – Required language ability
To be eligible for the SUVP, candidates need to demonstrate a level 5 in either English or French from the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). CLB stands for Canadian Learning Benchmarks, a system used to evaluate reading, writing, listening, and other competencies. While French testing can be evaluated using TEF or TCF, English testing is done using IELTS or CELPIP.
Required medical and security clearance
As part of the entry requirements to Canada, the usual security and medical clearances must be met. It may be necessary to obtain police clearance certificates or police check results for demonstrating security clearance. Additionally, a medical exam could be required to show that you are well enough to travel.
The program includes the option for applicants to acquire a TWP – ( temporary work permit). It will allow them to enter Canada and begin working there.
