Grandparents or Parents of Canadian permanent citizens and residents are qualified to come to Canada and benefit from all of its advantages, including citizenship, through the PGP (parents and Grandparents Program). Despite is less common than the super visa because it is available once a year and selected through a lottery system.
It is possible for grandparents and parents of Canadian residents and citizens to enter and live permanently in Canada thanks to the Super Visa, which works as a temporary residence visa (TRV) with a validity of up to ten years if they reside continuously for five years. PGP offers parents and grandparents some options for PR and eventually citizenship, but does not offer them as many as PGP.
The eligibility criteria
Parents or grandparents may sponsor their children as long as they meet the following requirements:
- Having reached the age of 18.
- Citizenship or permanent residency in Canada.
- When the application is being submitted and when the parents or grandparents are scheduled to arrive in Canada.
- The ability to make good financial decisions.
Ineligible Applicants
Additionally, candidates who do not meet the eligibility requirements for either program will not be eligible:
- Refused to repay an immigration debt, a performance bond, or family support (like child support or alimony).
- They had previously sponsored a family member but did not deliver the promised financial support.
- Other requirements for eligibility must be met.
The financial requirements
The Low-Income Cutoff (LICO) must be met by Super Visa candidates.
For those applying to the PGP, the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) standards must be satisfied. The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) requires a Notice of Assessment (NOA) before applicants may submit their application and demonstrate that the sponsor has met the MNI for their case within the past three tax years.
The process of application
Similar to an ordinary TRV, a Super Visa requires sponsorship. A greater amount of evidence is needed to prove that parents or grandparents can be taken care of in Canada.
In order to be added to the candidate pool, candidates must meet the requirements for the PGP and demonstrate their eligibility. Inviting candidates to apply will include further instructions for those chosen.
It is not possible for the sponsored individuals to be denied entry into Canada due to criminal or medical reasons. Immigration Medical Examinations (IMEs) are required for both programs, and Police Clearances are required for the PGP.
Quebec availability
Québec residents and citizens are also eligible to participate in both programs, but additional requirements apply, such as acquiring a Quebec Selection Certificate and using a special MNI system.
