Want to sponsor your parents and grandparents in Canada ?

Marco Mendicino, the minister of IRCC, has released the details about the opening of the Parents and Grandparents Program for 2020. The PGP is crucial to Canada as it is built on the country’s commitment to reuniting families.

PGP application intake

The federal government will open the PGP intake window from October 13, 2020 (12 p.m. EDT) to November 3, 2020 (12 p.m. EST). So, permanent residents and Canadian citizens can submit interest to sponsor application form online during this 3-weeks period. After the process of form submission is completed, IRCC will select some potential sponsors randomly and will issue invitations to them to submit a complete application. Note: Differently-abled persons who are not able to fill the form online can request an alternative option (Braille, paper copy, etc) by contacting the IRCC.

Eligibility Criteria for 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program

Applicants must meet the following requirements before submitting an interest form to sponsor their parents for permanent residence:

The sponsor should be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian (Canadian Indian Act);
At least 18 years old;
Applicant must be living in Canada;
Must exceed the minimum required income level
Sign an undertaking to support the sponsored person financially for 20 years;
Sign an undertaking to repay if the sponsored family member takes any social assistance for 20 years;

Temporary policy: Income requirement eased

Canada has relaxed the income requirements for sponsors. Since many people in Canada have lost their regular income due to the ongoing pandemic situation, the government has reduced the income requirement for sponsors for the taxation year 2020. Applicants do not need to have more than 30% of the minimum required income in order to sponsor their family members. Sponsors will have to submit Canada Revenue Agency notices of Assessment to confirm that they meet the income requirements. The Canadian government believes in keeping the families together. Therefore, it has been taking important steps to reunite families during the difficult times of the pandemic. However, IRCC will accept only 10,000 applications for the 2020 intake. The Ministry has announced that nearly 30,000 applications will be considered in 2021 for another intake period.
