Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada is testing a new tool that will recommend specific Canadian cities to new immigrants.
The new algorithm will help people to figure out the Canadian city in which they can enjoy a successful career.
Most of the new immigrants prefer living in the big cities of Canada such as Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto. However, they can find better work opportunities in other cities depending on their occupations. For instance, a tech worker would get good work opportunities in Toronto, but for a petroleum engineer, Toronto may not be the best city.
IRCC has been conducting a research model for this new tool, named as GeoMatch, at Stanford University. The tool would use historical data and will suggest the cities in which the new immigrants would be able to flourish.
Presently, most of the newcomers want to settle in popular cities. They are more inclined towards big cities as they know little about small cities spread across Canada with good work opportunities.
GeoMatch suggests cities to immigrants according to the data that is collected considering factors such as education, personal characteristics, and work history of previous immigrants. The tool establishes a pattern (using the data) of how economic success is achieved in different locations.
So, GeoMatch can help immigrants find the best destination for them with the help of personalized information.
A study suggested that newcomers who accepted the GeoMatch recommendations would have more chances of getting a well-paying job. Also, the tool not only works on the basis of data-driven recommendations but also on the immigrants’ settlement preferences.
