Back in 1967, the Canadian government analysed its labour market and tested if newcomers fit well in the Canadian labour market needs. The most crucial pathway among them is the (FSWP) Federal Skilled Worker Program.
Since 1967 a lot has changed, especially the number of immigration pathways for skilled workers by the Canadian government.
There are 120 economic class immigration streams in Canada. The government authorities believe that immigration is a responsibility that is shared between the federal government and all territories across the country.
Considering the size of the country the communication between the federal government and different Canadian territories must be managed efficiently. The streams designed are meant to uplift the labor market needs which clearly indicates that Canada has opened its arms in front of newcomers who have scored the highest and have a skilled job background.
Canada has launched a new program called the Immigration Levels Plan which is set to welcome around 400,000 immigrants every year. Out of these 400,000 immigrants, 60 percent of them will set foot in Canada under skilled immigration or business immigration. 25 percent will come via family sponsorship, whereas 15 percent will be accepted as refugees.
Below is the list of the most prominent pathways for Canadian immigration.
Express Entry
The Canadian department of immigration is called the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and this body manages the Express Entry to welcome skilled immigrants every year. Till now according to the statistics, IRCC’s Express Entry System welcomes 110,000 newcomers every year.
In order to be eligible under the Express Entry you have to qualify in any one of the below-mentioned programs, which are:
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
If you qualify in either of these above-mentioned programs you have a chance to enter Canada through Express Entry. On the official government IRCC website. IRCC needs information like relationship status, education, job experience, age, English/ French language proficiency. The immigration department has a new ranking system that ranks the candidates according to their eligibility. The Comprehensive Ranking System is the score provider in accordance with the information provided earlier.
ITA Invitations to Apply are issued to potential permanent resident candidates when IRCC holds Express Entry draws. The CRS highest scoring candidate is awarded an ITA that can be later submitted by the candidate in the process of settling in Canada permanently.
If you have never been to Canada and want to settle there you will have to try the FSWP since it is the only option that will make you enter the Express Entry pool. You will have to check your eligibility criteria prior to getting into the Express Entry Pool. Once you have successfully secured a position in the Express Entry pool you will also secure an additional CRS point, if you have been nominated as a provincial nomination and a 600 bonus CRS points and the eligible job will fetch you an extra 50 or even 200 points.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Almost every province in Canada has its own provincial Nominee Program according to their needs. All the provinces possess the power to hire international skilled workers if there is a scarcity of local talent. The prime aim is to boost up Canada’s economy and close all the labour market gaps. Once a candidate is eligible for a PNP they get an extra 600 points which ultimately makes him enter the Express Entry Pool. Canada has aimed to welcome over 80,000 newcomers per year.
Almost all provinces that operate their PNP stream goes through the Express Entry. You can even apply for a PNP stream straight away. But first, you will have to carry out detailed research that enlists your capability and eligibility to live and work in the province you wish to apply for.
Quebec
Quebec has been granted a special status as the only Francophone province. Any skilled worker can straight away apply to get a provincial nomination by Quebec. The province of Quebec gardens its own immigration criteria and accepts over 25,000 skilled immigrants each year. If your application is approved by the province you will be granted a Quebec Application election Certificate that will help you get a permanent residency submitted to the immigration department of Canada.
Other Federal Programs
There are other government programs governed by the IRCC that invite skilled newcomers to fulfill the territorial and occupational requirements.
If you ever want to move to an Atlantic province such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island) you must try the Atlantic Immigration Pilot. Every year 6,000 newcomers are welcomed by IRCC under this stream.
Another type of program is the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot that entertains 2,750 applications per annum. This program is created for skilled employees who have helped to bridge the increasing labor market needs of the country. Canada is itself a multi-billion and agri-food sector.
