A comfortable life in Canada is largely dependent on creating safe and welcoming communities; this is especially true for newcomers and all Canadian citizens. Moreover, to support and enhance Canadians’ trust in the safety and inclusivity of their neighborhoods, the government has committed to a number of continuing measures outlined in Canada’s 2024 Budget.
The 2024 Budget provides funding for a number of initiatives designed to protect communities and promote inclusivity across the nation. These activities cover a wide range of projects, such as supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives, improving community policing programs, investing in social infrastructure, and supporting law enforcement efforts.
The Canadian government hopes to foster a sense of security and belonging among its citizens, regardless of their circumstances or history, by giving these projects top priority. These initiatives are essential to building resilient, cohesive communities where everyone can prosper and make a good contribution to society.
Canada’s dedication to inclusivity
Canada, which is well-known for its multiculturalism, has a long history of embracing immigrants from all over the world. The most recent federal budget, which highlights the contributions of successive waves of immigrants who have assiduously carved out new lives in their adoptive country, continues this history of welcoming diversity. In keeping with this pledge, the government is working hard to improve community resilience, hospitality, and inclusivity for the benefit of all Canadians.
The budget for 2024 outlines the specific steps the government is taking to support and promote diversity and inclusion across the country.
Promoting gender equality
The federal government has committed over $190 million to programs that address abuse, harassment, and maltreatment in the sports industry and work to increase accountability. This significant investment aims to overcome barriers to participation, especially for vulnerable communities including racialized folks and other equity-deserving groups, in addition to promoting gender equality within sports.
Combating racism in Canada
Over $260 million has been allocated by Canada to various projects, including the Canada Race Relations Foundation, the Anti-Racism Strategy, and the Action Plan on Combatting Hate, since the fiscal year 2018-19. The primary objective of these initiatives is to preserve and enhance our society by celebrating Canada’s extraordinary diversity, while also fighting bigotry and intolerance.
Helping the 2SLGBTQI+ community in Canada
Providing almost $150 million over a ten-year period to support Canada’s first Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan. The goals of this effort are to strengthen and advance the rights of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, to keep up the momentum within it, and to include 2SLGBTQI+ issues into the work of the Canadian government.
Enhancing Community Safety – Canada’s Initiatives
Canada’s status as the world’s most sought-after destination for immigrants can be primarily ascribed to its role as a secure sanctuary for travel, settlement, and permanent residence for both international visitors and citizens. Canada firmly established itself as the world’s safest travel destination for 2024 towards the end of 2023.
The Canadian government has unveiled a number of initiatives targeted at improving community safety nationwide as part of its ongoing commitment to safety. These preemptive measures aim to ensure that Canada remains a safe and welcoming country for both citizens and tourists in the foreseeable future.
Safeguarding children
The project to ensure the protection of children and all Canadians will receive $52 million in financing over five years, starting in 2024–2025, along with $2.1 million in overdue amortization. Under this program, the government will hold major internet platforms accountable for their conduct and compel them to take appropriate measures to reduce users’ exposure to hazardous content. The government will appoint a Digital Safety Ombudsperson to serve as a resource and advocate for individuals harmed online, while also establishing a Digital Safety Commission to oversee the implementation of this responsibility.
In addition, Public Safety Canada will receive a $2.5 million investment in 2024–2025 to support the Canadian Centre for Child Protection in their efforts to stop and deal with cases of child sexual exploitation on the internet.
Furthermore, the Public Health Agency of Canada will receive $7.5 million over three years, starting in 2024–2025, to support Kids Help Phone (KHP). The purpose of this investment is to improve the mental health services, counseling, and crisis support that KHP offers to youth.
Combatting hate crimes
The federal budget for 2023 allotted $49.5 million over five years, starting in 2023–2024; in the fall of 2023, Public Safety Canada reallocated an extra $10 million. The government budgetary funds aim to enhance security infrastructure at gathering places to support communities vulnerable to hate-related violence.
Minimizing workplace harassment
To support victims of workplace sexual harassment, Justice Canada will continue to pay legal advice and instructional materials with a $30.6 million three-year investment starting in 2024–2025.
