According to the announcement of immigration minister Sean Fraser, Canada will be extending the deadline for submitting the CUAET applications for Ukrainians and their families until July 15, 2023.
As of March 31, 2024, current holders of the CUAET will be able to extend or modify their temporary status in Canada without incurring any fees. After arriving in Canada, Ukrainians and their families still have access to short-term emergency housing and one-time tax-free cash support.
About CUAET – Canada Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Canada introduced the CUAET. The CUAET permits Ukrainians and their family members to live temporarily in Canada, regardless of their nationality, for three years. CUAET measures extend visitor status, work visas, and study permits to Ukrainians already residing in Canada.
CUAET applications were submitted by 943,730 Ukrainians by March 16, and 616,429 applications were accepted. The number of immigrants who have made it to Canada is still relatively low at 190,970. Despite being primarily a visiting visa, Ukrainians may also apply for a work permit simultaneously and without charge. Work permits with open work restrictions allow participants to work for any Canadian employer.
In addition to the one-time, non-taxable incentive package, the federal government also provides a $1,500 incentive package for kids under 17 and $3,000 for adults. The benefit, which is slated to end on June 24, is the only settlement assistance provided to newcomers from Ukraine.
CUAET applications – Ukraine’s other support measures
It is also possible to receive assistance at the provincial level. For example, Ukrainians often qualify for Manitoba’s provincial nomination program. It can be beneficial to Ukrainians seeking permanent residency under Express Entry. Saskatchewan has a similar provincial immigration program.
Ukrainian community organizations and settlement service providers in Ontario have worked together to make emergency housing more accessible. As well as the provincial government has canceled health fees for newly arrived Ukrainians. The interim solution can be a host home or another interim arrangement until permanent housing is found.
In addition to supporting Ukrainian immigrants’ successful integration, some charitable organizations in Canada are supporting their efforts as well. Over 500 Ukrainians have entered the country through 4Ukraine.ca. More than 1,000 resumes have been prepared, and more than $275, 000 has been raised for charity.
Ukrainian workers are being encouraged to work in Canada by the federal government. These actions can be taken by employers who wish to hire Ukrainian immigrants through jobbank.ca:
- Become a registered employer on Job Bank.
- It is necessary to create new job postings and save them as drafts.
- Inform Job Bank that you are looking to hire Ukrainian nationals by contacting them and providing the reference number of the job posting.
