Immigration holds an immense amount of importance for Canada’s population growth. It could not be denied that Canada is dependent on immigrants to surge the population growth.
As per a new study by Statistics Canada, the population of Canada increased by 76,000 people in the first three months this year. And 82 percent of this growth is facilitated by Immigration. With this, Canada’s total population has become 38 million people.
In January, the COVID-19 started engulfing Canada and by March 18th, the country enforced travel restrictions. Due to this, less number of temporary residents arrived and fewer people returned to the country, compared to the same timeline of the previous year.
However, if we compare the immigration numbers of the first three months of 2020 with that of 2019, we see that nearly 70,000 immigrants arrived in Canada during the first three months of 2020, while in 2019 there were only 66,000 immigrants arriving in Canada. So, the numbers were higher this year.
If not for the coronavirus, Canada would have had much higher immigration numbers at the beginning of 2020.
Considering the dependency of Canada on immigration to fuel its population growth, it is pertinent that Canada plans to welcome a large number of immigrants post-coronavirus.
Also, the IRCC has not changed the Immigration Levels Plan for 2020-2022 due to the coronavirus. Once the pandemic is over, Canada is likely to give a lot more importance to immigration.
