Canada has been ranked the safest country in the world for travellers in 2027, according to a new report by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP).
The organisation published its annual World’s Safest Places ranking on October 28, 2026. Canada secured the top position after moving up four places from the previous year’s list. It had ranked behind the Netherlands, Australia, Austria and Iceland in 2026.

Canada also ranked first in a key safety category covering women, LGBTQIA+ travellers and people of colour.
BHTP considers several areas when preparing its overall ranking, including:
- Safety for women, LGBTQIA+ travellers and people of colour
- Safety from violent crime
- Safety from terrorism
- Transportation safety
- Health measures
Canada secured second place for health measures, protection from violent crime and safety from terrorism.
Montreal also received recognition in BHTP’s separate ranking of the safest cities for travellers. The Canadian city moved up from 16th place in the previous edition to become the top-ranked city, with an overall score of 82.18.
How The Safety Ranking Is Prepared?
BHTP’s World’s Safest Places ranking is mainly based on a survey of American travellers. Participants rated countries they had visited during the previous five years.
The organisation also considers information from external sources to assess safety conditions. These include:
- The Global Peace Index.
- Numbeo.
- GeoSure Global.
- The World Health Organization.
- The Equaldex Equality Index.
- The Global Terrorism Index.
The final ranking uses an average of six safety category scores, along with information from the external sources. However, BHTP gives the greatest weight to responses from its own traveller survey.
The published ranking includes only the top 15 countries, although the survey covers at least 31 countries.
According to BHTP, Canada’s leading position reflects strong survey results for the safety of women, LGBTQIA+ travellers and people of colour. The country also received positive ratings from the Equaldex Equality Index, Global Peace Index and Global Terrorism Index.
Canada is also one of eight countries included in BHTP’s Safe Travel Hall of Fame. This recognition is given to countries that have maintained a position among the top 10 since the ranking began in 2018.
