A recent report by Statistics Canada indicates that Child immigrants to Canada achieve higher education and achieve better economic success. This group of young immigrants even surpassed other Canadian taxpayers in earnings by the age of 25.
Child immigrants to Canada achieve higher education – The sooner, the better
Researchers found a favorable association between the age at which newcomers arrive in Canada and their likelihood of pursuing post-secondary education. The Longitudinal Immigrant Database is a comprehensive model that tracks long-term trends among immigrants to Canada.
For example, 77.3% of individuals who arrived in Canada at the age of 4 were engaged in post-secondary education by the age of 20. This tendency continued for immigrants who arrived between the ages of 5 and 9, of whom 69.9% pursued higher education, and those who arrived between the ages of 10 and 14, of whom 61.3% did so.
Even when compared to the whole Canadian population, immigrant cohorts demonstrated a significantly greater percentage of participation in higher education, since only 59.9% of all tax filers in Canada pursued post-secondary education by the age of 20.
Median Wages of Newcomers Surpass Canadian Average by Age 30
This pattern also included immigrants’ economic performance according to their immigration age to Canada. In particular, compared to the average income of all Canadian tax filers in their age group, immigrant tax filers who were admitted to Canada as children reported higher incomes.
But this higher earning potential didn’t come about right away; rather, it happened later in life. For instance, compared to other Canadian tax filers between the ages of 18 and 24, immigrants who arrived in Canada as youngsters made marginally less money in the median salary. However, this group of newcomers’ median incomes began to either meet or surpass those of all Canadian tax filers in the same age range after they turned 25.

What do these findings suggest?
The results of the study indicate that immigrants’ outcomes in the employment market and their engagement in higher education are both positively impacted by their early arrival in Canada. According to the research, immigrants are more likely to seek post-secondary education and earn more money if they arrive earlier. Furthermore, early arrivals in Canada also typically experience better results than later arrivals, both relative to each other and the overall Canadian population. The lack of investigation into the sources of this tendency, however, suggests that further work is necessary to identify its root causes.
This study contributes to the body of data demonstrating a positive correlation between immigrants’ economic performance in Canada and the age at which they gain entry. It appears that this correlation is valid in the short, medium, and long terms.
Other research has also observed that the positive correlation between higher incomes and early arrival in Canada tends to grow stronger over time. This finding is consistent with the CRS weighting, which gives preference to younger immigrants based on their age, implying that those who arrived earlier have a competitive edge in attaining favorable economic results.
