The 12 members Standing committee on Canadian Citizen and Immigration knew as the CIMM was formed in the new session of parliament that will govern over the policies of federation related to immigration and multiculturalism.
The committee is designed to overlook the norms of the process of immigration in Canada. To check if it is happening smoothly and efficiently.
All the IRCC related matters and events taking place with the board of IRB (Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada). The committee is responsible to handle all the functionalities of immigration smoothly in Canada while recording data and reporting on each of these organizations. It has the power that monitors the operation department of Canadian immigration.
There are additional things too that the committee does. It also oversees that statute law and all the previous backlogs and the applications of immigration. It also examines the programs, objectives, and policies too.
In the parliamentary session previously held, a major study about COVID-19 impact on Immigration in Canada was carried by the CIMM. It made valid points and recommendations on how the immigration system can be altered for better effectiveness and smooth functioning. Although, it should be noted that the committee cannot make any changes in the functionality of the system but can study data and make informed policies.
The elected members of the Parliament come from an eligible political party, together make up the committee. There is a rule in Canada that a committee and a party shall only be considered valid if it has 12 members and more in the House of Commons. The members are named and the election of the chair is done. On December 14th, the first committee chair will be elected.
