Canada will open parents and grandparents sponsorship intake, i.e., some Canadian citizens and permanent residents will soon have a chance to reunite with their families by sponsoring their parents or grandparents for permanent residency through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).
The federal government has confirmed it will begin sending out invitations to potential sponsors starting on July 28, 2025.
Over a two-week period, the government plans to send out 17,860 invitations. The goal is to approve 10,000 complete applications for the 2025 intake.
IRCC will issue all invitations to individuals who submitted an interest to sponsor form back in 2020. Since then, the program has not reopened its interest form, so only those who are part of the 2020 intake are eligible for this round of invitations.
If you do not receive an invitation this time, there is still an alternative route to bring your parents or grandparents to Canada: the super visa program. This program allows eligible family members to visit Canada for extended periods of time, offering a flexible option for family reunification.
About The Parents And Grandparents Program
As Canada will open parents and grandparents sponsorship intake, it is vital to note that the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is one of Canada’s main family reunification pathways to permanent residency. Through this program, eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians can apply to sponsor their parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada permanently.
Due to high demand and limited spots, IRCC uses a lottery system to issue invitations. Only those who receive an invitation can submit a sponsorship application under the PGP.
The last intake for new interest to sponsor forms was held in 2020. Since then, the government has continued to draw from this pool to issue invitations to apply.
About The Super Visa
If you’re not selected for the PGP this year, the super visa remains an excellent option for bringing your parents or grandparents to Canada. Unlike regular visitor visas which typically allow a stay of up to six months, the super visa allows eligible relatives to visit Canada for up to 10 years.
Applicants must buy qualifying health insurance and meet all admissibility requirements. The host must meet minimum income thresholds and promise to support their family members throughout their stay.
This program gives families a meaningful way to stay connected while waiting for permanent sponsorship options to reopen.
