A New Initiative By Canada: Agri-Food Immigration Pilot

Canada has launched a new immigration program known as Agri-Food Immigration Pilot. This pilot program will provide a way to Canadian Permanent Residence to those individuals who are working in the agri-food industries. And the pilot program will give them an opportunity to settle permanently in Canada. Canada is facing labor shortages in industries like meat processing, livestock-raising, and mushroom and greenhouse production. So, Canada needs workers related to these fields. Temporary foreign workers won’t have to re-apply for the work permit as the pilot will enable them to get the status of a permanent resident. The IRCC will take nearly 2,750 principal applicants as well as their family members every year for a period of three years. The government has already started taking applications for the Agri-food Immigration Pilot and will continue accepting applications till May 14, 2023. Employers in the agri-food sector are facing difficulties in executing their operations because of the shortage of workforce. The Agri-Food Immigration Pilot had to be launched by the end of March this year. The coronavirus pandemic, however, delayed the launch. Temporary foreign workers with work experience in the agri-food industries will get an opportunity to work permanently in Canada through this pilot. The Quebec province is excluded from this immigration program as it has its own immigration system.
