The second quarter population projections for 2022 have been released by Statistics Canada (StatCan). An estimate of Canada’s population growth was included in the study. As well as information regarding the substantial impact immigration had during this time period.
StatsCan has published its Q2 estimates
According to the official data, Canada’s population was 389,299,902 on 1st July 2022, an increase of 0.7% from 1 April 2022. It takes into account incompletely enumerated reserves and census net under coverage. The population growth projections for the period from 10 may 2016 through 2021 are also included in this estimate.
The reason for projection growth
94.5% of Canada’s population growth (269,305 people) is attributed to international migration, according to the latest estimate. International migration has not contributed to Canada’s population growth. In this manner since Q3 of 2019 when 175,907 new residents arrived. It was the nation’s highest immigration rate since comparable data began being kept in Q2 2022 with 118,114 immigrants entering the country.
Taking a closer look at StatsCan’s estimate, it becomes clear that the majority of Canada’s population growth (+ 157,310) in the second quarter of 2022 was attributed to non-permanent residents, such as refugees, people with work or study permits, and those displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Information on the population estimate provided by StatsCan
According to the estimate, there have been 284,982 more Canadians in the last three months. It equates to an increase of more than 3,100 individuals every day. Since the addition of the Newfoundland and Labrador Confederation in 1949, this population estimate indicates the biggest single-quarter rise in the population of the country.
The most recent population estimate from StatsCan shows the highest rate of population growth since the third quarter of 1957, just before the baby boom’s peak (+0.8%).
StatsCan’s latest estimate – key takeaways
Due to IRCC targets for increasing immigration. It was assumed that international migration would have an impact on Canada’s population growth. After observing reduced levels of immigration early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Canada is planning to welcome record-high levels of newcomers to support its economy in the face of an aging natural population and a low birth rate.
Foreign immigration is expected to be an increasingly important factor in the country’s population growth in the years to come. Given that Canada hopes to accept approximately 430,000 new permanent residents each year.
Looking forward
The Canadian government will provide another update on its immigration strategy. This update will be provided when they submit their immigration level plan for 2023 to 2025 by 1 November 2022.
