IRCC conducted this week’s Express Entry draw and 150 candidates were invited to the draw. The department conducted a selection draw for agriculture and agri-food occupations, inviting 150 candidates based on category criteria. Candidates needed to achieve a minimum CRS score of 437.
This week’s draw followed two earlier draws that had particular scenarios. First, on February 13, there was a general draw in which ITAs were sent to 1,490 candidates who had at least a 535 CRS score.
In a category-based selection draw aimed at health care jobs, IRCC granted ITAs to 3,500 applicants on February 14. Candidates have to have a minimum CRS score of 422 in order to be taken into consideration.
In addition, 7,000 individuals with strong French language ability were invited to a category-based selection draw that took place on February 1. Interestingly, this was the biggest draw of the year so far.
Three general drawings in January attracted 3,280 contestants in all. For these draws, the minimum CRS score ranged from 546 to 541.

An overview of Category-Based Draws within the Express Entry System
Canada had instituted a system of category-based choices in May of the previous year, with the express purpose of addressing urgent market demands. In order to meet these pressing demands, IRCC identified six high-demand areas nationwide and implemented this new strategy.
Within these categories, five are occupation-based, while one is language-based. These encompass:
- Occupations within the Healthcare sector
- Professions falling under the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) sector
- Occupations within the Trades sector
- Professions within the Transport sector
- Occupations within the Agriculture and Agri-food sector
- Proficiency in the French Language
Consultations and opinions from a range of stakeholders, including employers, immigration researchers, provincial and territorial governments, and settlement agencies, were taken into consideration when immigration authorities selected these categories. A thorough evaluation of several factors was carried out, which resulted in the identification of fields with significant demand across the country.
Understanding the Essentials of Express Entry
The CRS is used by Express Entry programs to rank candidates against one another according to critical human capital criteria. These variables include age, occupation, education, work experience, and language ability. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class are the three main programs offered by the Express Entry system.
Every human capital aspect in this evaluation has a defined point value, which goes toward determining a person’s total CRS score. Applicants who receive a CRS score are added to the competitive pool and must compete with other candidates. The chance of receiving an ITA increases with CRS score.
Candidates have 60 days from the time they receive an ITA to apply directly to IRCC for permanent residence in Canada. This multi-pronged approach guarantees that people with a range of abilities and qualities contribute to Canada’s economic environment.
