Pictou County lists priority jobs for PR under RCIP, i.e., Pictou County has announced the sectors and occupations it will prioritize for permanent residence (PR) through the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) in 2026.
The region, located in northern Nova Scotia along the Northumberland Strait, has expanded its priority list this year. Officials have added one new sector and 14 new occupations to help address local labour shortages.
The RCIP is a federal immigration pathway created to support smaller communities across Canada. It helps these areas attract skilled foreign workers who are willing to live and work in rural regions.
To qualify for permanent residence under this program, foreign nationals must receive a valid job offer from an employer designated by Pictou County. The job must also fall within an eligible sector and occupation identified by the community.
Pictou County’s RCIP region includes several areas across northern Nova Scotia. These include Pictou Landing First Nation, the Municipality of Pictou County, and the towns of New Glasgow, Pictou, Stellarton, Trenton, and Westville.
Today, we will discuss the sectors and occupations that the region will prioritize in 2026 and explain how foreign workers can be considered for selection through the pilot.
So, without further ado, let us begin1
Priority Sectors For 2026
In 2026, Pictou County has chosen six sectors as priority areas under the RCIP. Last year, the region focused on five sectors, meaning one additional sector has been included this year.
The selected sectors reflect industries where employers are facing labour shortages and require skilled workers.
Here are the sectors given priority status in 2026:
- Business, finance, and administration
- Health
- Sales and service
- Trades, transport, and equipment operators
- Manufacturing
- Education, law and social, community, and government services
Most of these sectors remain the same as those selected in 2025. The only change this year is the addition of Education, law and social, community, and government services. This new sector reflects a growing demand for workers in education, community support, and government-related roles.
Priority Occupations In 2026
Along with the sector list, Pictou County has also released its priority occupations for the year.

How Candidates Can Be Considered For RCIP?
Foreign nationals who want to immigrate to Canada through the RCIP in Pictou County must first secure a valid job offer from a designated employer in the region.
Only employers that have been approved by the community can participate in the pilot. These employers recruit workers for jobs in sectors and occupations that the community has identified as priorities.
Once a job offer is made, the employer sends a recommendation request to Pictou County on behalf of the foreign worker.
The community then reviews the application and evaluates the candidate using a scoring system. Several factors are considered during this process, including work experience, occupation, and language ability.
Candidates who meet the requirements are placed into an application pool.
At the end of each month, the highest-ranking candidates are selected from the pool. These selections continue until the yearly allocation for the pilot has been reached.
Candidates who receive a recommendation from the community can then apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence.

In addition to receiving a job offer, applicants must meet several federal eligibility conditions to qualify for the RCIP.
