Effective January 30, 2024, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core now test approved for all Canadian immigration pathways, excluding the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This update signifies broader acceptance and accessibility for immigration candidates, showcasing the PTE Core test as a viable language proficiency assessment option for various immigration avenues in Canada.
This suggests that PTE Core is now an option for candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), candidates in Express Entry managed programs, and anyone needing a language proficiency test for any other Canadian immigration purpose, like applications for Canadian citizenship. This increase in acceptance gives a wider variety of immigration candidates more options and gives them more leeway in fulfilling the language competency standards for the specific immigration channels that lead to Canada.
Understanding Core PTE
The goal of the computer-based language test PTE Core is to verify general English ability for immigration reasons to Canada. Completed within two hours, this comprehensive test evaluates everyday English proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and listening. It is convenient for candidates to take the test because there are more than 400 testing facilities available worldwide.
To reduce prejudice, Pearson, the company that created PTE Core, uses a dual scoring system including both artificial intelligence and human evaluators. According to Pearson’s website, test-takers can anticipate receiving their results in as little as two days on average. This method guarantees an impartial and effective assessment procedure for people wishing to demonstrate their language skills for immigration and associated reasons in Canada.
The PTE Core consists of three segments:
- Speaking and writing: 50 minutes
- Reading: 30 minutes
- Listening: 30 minutes
The PTE Core has replaced the previous PTE Essential exam, which received approval for use in Canada the year before. It is important to note that Pearson, like other accredited language testing companies, offers a variety of exams, one of which is PTE Academic. Moreover, prospective immigrants are strongly advised to ensure that they select the appropriate test in accordance with the specifications of the program they have chosen. This ensures accuracy and compliance with immigration laws.
Five approved language assessments
IRCC now recognizes five language exams for immigration purposes, with the PTE Core being one of them.
These assessments include:
- IELTS General Training (English)
- TEF Canada (French)
- CELPIP General Test (English)
- PTE Core (English)
- TCF Canada (French)
Furthermore, the four main language abilities that are assessed on each of the five assessments are speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Also, the specific program to which applicants are applying may have different requirements for successful qualification within these four skill categories.
For example, immigration applicants under programs operated by Express Entry may need to achieve different scores based on the program they choose. Candidates for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) must have a minimum CLB level of 7 in all language proficiency areas. On the other hand, applicants for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) must have at least a level 4 CLB in reading and writing and a minimum CLB level of 5 in speaking and hearing. Furthermore, candidates must have a minimum CLB level 7 or level 5 across all language abilities in order to be eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), depending on the NOC competence level in their line of work.
