Individuals enrolling in master’s programs lasting less than two years are now eligible for an extended three-year post-graduation work permit (PGWP), effective immediately. The IRCC has updated the prior association between the length of the study program and the PGWP. The recognition of the significant potential that master’s degree graduates have to make valuable contributions to Canada’s labor market is reflected in this shift. With this update, Master’s degree holders eligible for extended work permits, showcasing the Canadian government’s commitment to facilitating post-graduation opportunities for international students.
Master’s degree holders eligible for extended work permits
The fact that the PGWP is now longer attests to the useful abilities and contributions that master’s students make to the Canadian labor market. This policy change supports the IRCC’s initiatives to draw in and keep exceptional people who have finished their master’s degrees in Canada. Also, a more open and inviting atmosphere for experienced professionals from around the world is fostered by offering improved post-graduation job experience to international students studying for shorter master’s degrees. Students enrolling in programs other than master’s level will continue to get PGWPs for a maximum of three years, which corresponds to the duration of their study programs.
Students enrolling in programs at DLIs, which qualify for PGWPs—these being the only universities allowed to admit overseas students—now have access to an extended three-year Post Graduation Work Permit if the program duration is at least two years.
IRCC will also be amending the rules pertaining to spousal work permits for international undergraduate students in the coming weeks. Thus, the only people who can apply for a spousal work visa will be the wives of master’s and doctorate students. Moreover, it’s crucial to remember that wives or conjugal partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents will not have their spousal open work permits affected by this amendment. This calculated move actively aligns the requirements for spouse work permits more closely with the educational backgrounds of international students studying in Canada.
