In Major Cabinet Changes at 10:30, Justin Trudeau announced that Marc Miller was appointed Canada’s new immigration minister.
As Canada’s new minister of immigration, Marc Miller is a Quebec-born member of parliament. In his previous position, Miller was Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, which was responsible for supporting the right to self-determination for Indigenous peoples of Canada. As minister of housing, infrastructure, and communities, Sean Fraser most recently served as Canada’s immigration minister.
Miller was elected to the Canadian Parliament for the first time in 2015. In addition to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, Miller was an attorney before entering politics. Originally from Montreal, Miller grew up there. Université de Montréal awarded him two degrees in political science and McGill University awarded him a law degree.
Cabinet members are appointed by the Canadian prime minister. The national government is responsible for pursuing and disseminating its policy initiatives.
A new cabinet is usually formed by the prime minister every two years or so. In addition to replacing underperforming ministers, shuffles allow the government to update its public relations and policy initiatives and promote those the prime minister believes have done a good job.
A significant reshuffle of governments took place in October of the same year after the federal election. This reorganization made Fraser the Minister of IRCC, as well as the head of the Department.
Marc Miller appointed Canada’s immigration minister – Canada’s rising immigration targets
Having been elected prime minister of Canada in November 2015, Justin Trudeau currently serves as the leader of the country. Immigration goals in Canada have become more aggressive over the years.
Approximately 250,000 new permanent citizens were welcomed into Canada annually before Trudeau took office. In the days before the epidemic, it had grown to 340,000 per year and then to 300,000 when Trudeau came to power. Over 400,000 new permanent residents were added to Canada’s population during the epidemic. By 2025, Canada aims to land 500,000 permanent residents yearly under the Immigration Levels Plan 2023–2025.
Immigration levels are specifically sought to increase due to the aging population of Canada and the low birth rate. Canada’s federal government views immigration as a means to support the economy and financial health of the country as nine million baby boomers enter retirement age in the next ten years. The number of immigrants to Canada is rising at a time when unemployment rates are historically low, and job vacancies are historically high.
The prime minister may decide to issue new mandate letters to the cabinet after reorganizing the cabinet significantly.
A list of immigration plans was provided to Fraser by Trudeau in December 2021, which included increasing immigration caps, simplifying the newcomer application process, updating Express Entry, encouraging family reunification, and encouraging francophone immigration.
Several of these strategies have been implemented by Fraser since then. Canada, for example, started holding category-based selection for Express Entry last month in order to address a number of economic priorities. An example of this is Fraser’s initiative to strengthen family preservation, which was announced in late May.
