As per the latest released statistics in 2022, Canadian education leads to higher earnings for immigrants. It examined how education obtained in Canada prior to immigration influenced income after immigration.
Study results showed that economic principle applicants with study experience in Canada earned significantly more after they immigrated than those with no study experience. Further evidence of the higher salaries can be found in the report. It states that the applicants’ improved proficiency in the official language and the experience they acquired in Canadian jobs contributed to their higher compensation.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students to work after they graduate. Providing them with the opportunity to gain work experience in Canada while studying. It is possible for them to become permanent residents of Canada through one of more than 100 economic immigration streams.
Besides finding that immigrants with degrees from Canada had a higher probability of being younger, more educated, more likely to speak an official language. And half as likely to have earned incomes in Canada before they immigrated than immigrants without degrees from Canada.
Long-term advantages of Canadian education
Also, compared to those with similar language profiles and prior Canadian work experience. Applicants with Canadian study experience earned less in their first years compared to those without. A higher percentage of immigrants with Canadian study experience. And a history of continued education tends to stay in school for a longer period after arriving in Canada.
It was still clear that studying in Canada would have long-term benefits. Economic immigrants became more integrated into the Canadian labor market. So the pre-arrival qualities that contributed to the earning benefits of studying in Canada became less important. Economic immigrants who had been educated in Canada had greater wages ten years following their arrival than those who had not.
In addition to providing immigrants with high-quality professional skills necessary to compete in the Canadian labor market. Formal education at Canadian educational institutions also helps them integrate into their local communities.
Ways to study in Canada
Applicants to Canadian universities and colleges are required to first choose and apply to a Canadian DLI – (designated learning institution) and then obtain an admission letter.
The study permit can be obtained after you are accepted to the DLI by IRCC.
Study permits can be applied for if you meet the following requirements:
- Your financial support should be sufficient to cover the first year of tuition, living expenses, and return transportation home.
- If you wish to study in Quebec, you must obtain a CAQ.
- Ensure your criminal record is clean. A police clearance certificate may be requested by the IRCC.
- Make sure you are in good health. A medical examination may be requested by IRCC.
- Provide proof that your study permit authorizes you to stay in Canada for a specified period of time.
Permanent Resident Pathway: Study
It is possible for Canadian post-secondary students to extend their stay after finishing their studies and eventually apply to become permanent citizens after completing their studies. Canadian education may benefit students seeking permanent residency. Since many immigration programs prefer candidates with a Canadian education and employment history.
As soon as you complete your studies in Canada, you will be eligible to apply for a PGWP (Post-Graduate Work Permit). It will allow you to work in Canada for a period of three years after completing your studies.
International students who wish to apply for the PGWP must meet the following requirements:
- Studying at an eligible DLI for at least eight months in an academic, professional training program, and vocational.
- A degree, diploma, or certificate must be the result of the study program.
- Incorporated full-time student status into their post-graduation work permit application during all academic sessions of their academic program.
- The DLI provided an official letter confirming that the applicant’s program is complete in accordance with all requirements.
With a PGWP, you can apply for a wide range of federal and state permanent residency programs including Express Entry and the Provincial Nomination Programs.
Canadian education through Express Entry
Canada’s Express Entry system oversees IRCC applications for immigrants from the economic class, which is the primary method through which it accepts immigrants from this class. Three separate programs are under the jurisdiction of Express Entry: the FSWP – (Federal Skilled Worker Program), FSTP, and the CEC – (Canadian Experience Class). Prior to applying to any of the three programs, an applicant must meet the minimum requirements for that particular program.
CRS is the method by which Canada’s employment market determines which applicants are most likely to succeed. CRS assigns each applicant a score when they apply. Every two weeks, the government of Canada conducts Express Entry lotteries inviting the most qualified applicants to apply to become permanent residents.
Provincial Nominee Program
Provinces and territories can select and nominate people who want to move permanently to a particular province and settle there through the PNP. Over 80 streams of study are available, catering to workers, graduates, and entrepreneurs.
Direct applications are accepted for the PNP stream. Candidates are required to satisfy all eligibility requirements outlined by the province and will be given a letter of nomination to submit their applications to the IRCC for permanent residency.
Express Entry is another option available to candidates. An applicant who qualifies for the Express Entry program will be more likely to receive an ITA if they are nominated by a province. The province will notify the applicant of its interest, inviting them to submit an application for provincial nomination. If it determines that the applicant would be a good fit. An Express Entry ITA is guaranteed to candidates who receive a provincial nomination since they will receive 600 CRS points right away.
Additional immigration routes for foreign students are provided by the federal government. For example the Northern Immigration Pilot Program and Atlantic Immigration Program.
