In a recent announcement, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative called “CAN Work Philippines.” This new pilot program, established at the IRCC visa office in Manila Canada, has introduced quick-access work permits in the Philippines.
The pilot will streamline work permit processing for eligible Canadian employers and allow them to schedule group appointments for medical examinations and biometrics for potential employees, so that skilled workers from the Philippines can come to Canada.
The pilot is for Canadian employers recruiting in the Philippines and hiring approximately 50 or more workers, or for critical occupations such as health care, construction, and agri-food.
To participate in the program, employers must demonstrate their commitment to fair and ethical recruitment guidelines, as published by the International Organization for Migration (ION).
Employers must show that they are committed to adhering to the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) fair and ethical recruitment requirements in order to be eligible for this program. This criteria is in line with worldwide norms and emphasizes the significance of ethical recruitment methods. Canadian firms can participate in the pilot and help ensure a reasonable and equitable recruiting process for Filipino workers looking for jobs in Canada by following these criteria.
Fostering fair recruitment: Canada-Philippines partnership
IRCC has allocated $200,000 to the IOM for promoting fair and ethical recruitment standards in the Philippines. This funding will facilitate collaboration between IOM and the Philippine Government, enabling training sessions and the promotion of IOM’s Fair and Ethical Recruitment Due Diligence Toolkit. This initiative targets organizations involved in or interested in recruiting talent from the Philippines.
Minister Marc Miller emphasized the vital role of temporary foreign workers, including a significant number of newcomers from the Philippines, in Canada’s economy and labor market. The CAN Work Philippines pilot program is expected to enhance Canada’s global competitiveness in attracting talent while addressing labor shortages. Simultaneously, the funding allocation reflects Canada’s ongoing commitment to ethical recruitment practices, prioritizing the well-being and safety of temporary foreign workers.
This initiative not only strengthens the close social ties between Canada and the Philippines but also addresses labor shortages in Canada, consolidating its position as a preferred destination for international talent.
One of the main countries from which Canada receives new immigrants is the Philippines. The two countries already have strong social ties, which this pilot program helps to strengthen. It also seeks to address the labor deficit that exists in the Canadian economy at the same time. This program strengthens the relationship between Canada and the Philippines while fostering economic growth and diversity in Canada by solving these gaps and boosting Canada’s appeal as a top destination for talent from around the world.
