IRCC declared an extension of a policy permitting select international students to work beyond the standard 20-hour per week limit for off-campus employment during non-academic breaks. This move addresses labor shortages in Canada. The policy, initially introduced in 2022, enables qualifying foreign students to engage in full-time off-campus work, providing them increased employment opportunities. Stay informed about the extended off-campus work privileges for foreign students in Canada through the latest updates from IRCC.
In 2022, the immigration department of Canada implemented a temporary policy in response to the country’s growing labor deficit. This program addressed labor shortages by allowing a subset of international students to work full-time off-campus. The policy, which went into effect on November 15, 2022, was originally scheduled to expire on December 31, 2022. However, as of yesterday, it was extended until April 30, 2024.
IRCC had previously set a cap of 20 hours per week for overseas students to work off-campus during the academic year. Nonetheless, students were permitted to work full-time during reading week and winter break as per the current IRCC policy. Up until April 2024, qualifying international students can continue to pursue improved off-campus employment options according to the most recent extension. Keep up with any new information from the IRCC.
As announced yesterday, foreign students enrolled in Canadian universities and those who applied for a study permit by December 7, 2023, would be permitted to work off-campus for more than the 20 hours per week, up to the length of the policy.
Impacts on eligible international students across Canada – Policy extension insights
Despite not going as far as many foreign students had hoped in making the policy permanent, the IRCC’s ruling is nevertheless a great help to many students studying throughout Canada. Working more hours provides relief from financial anxieties, which is especially helpful for overseas students who frequently struggle with money-related issues.
Qualifications for the IRCC work hours policy
The usual limit for off-campus employment can only be exceeded by a select group of overseas students. An overseas student must attend in-person classes at their Canadian post-secondary institution (not online from abroad) in order to work more than 20 hours per week. They also need to have off-campus work authorization on file with their study permit.
Additionally, students who applied for a study visa by October 7 of the previous year—that is, on the same day as the IRCC first announced the interim policy in 2022—have also been eligible to benefit from the lifting of the prohibition on working off-campus.
Exploring further initiatives: IRCC’s consideration of additional measures
The IRCC stressed in the most recent statement that it is dedicated to looking into potential future directions for the policy. The announcement notably referenced the possible possibility of “expanding off-campus work hours for international students to 30 hours per week while class is in session,” however no concrete steps have been made as of yet. If this move were to be put into effect, it would be different from the present practice, which limits overseas students studying in Canada to 20 hours of off-campus work per week while they are enrolled in classes.
